How to record your voice online

  1. Click the red button and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Speak. The bars show your input level; use pause between takes if you need to.
  3. Click stop, then listen back to your recording.
  4. Download it as MP3, or click Transcribe to text to get a transcript in a few minutes.

Tips for a clear recording

Get close to the microphone
About a hand's width from a headset or laptop mic is ideal. Distance adds echo and room noise, which hurt both sound and transcription.
Check the level before you start
Say a few words and watch the bars: they should move clearly when you speak but not fill up completely.
Pick a quiet room
Turn off fans and music, close the window, and avoid big empty rooms with hard walls.
Use pause, not stop
Pause between takes to keep everything in one file; stop only when you're done.
On a phone, keep the screen on
Some phones stop recording in a browser when the screen locks. The recorder asks your phone to stay awake, but keep this tab in front to be safe.

Record, then turn it into text

Voice notes, ideas, a lecture you're attending, an interview across the table: once you stop recording, one click sends the audio to be transcribed. You get readable paragraphs with timestamps, can click any line to hear it again, and download the text as Word, TXT, or SRT and VTT subtitles. If you mentioned names or technical terms, add them under the upload box below before you transcribe, so they're spelled right.

FAQ

Online voice recorder questions

Can't find an answer? Email us.

Is the online voice recorder free?

Yes. Recording and downloading are free and need no account. Transcribing uses the normal free plan: 3 files a day of up to 30 minutes each, and your first file needs no sign-up.

Where is my recording saved?

Only in your browser, until you download it or choose to transcribe it. If you close the tab without doing either, the recording is gone, so the page warns you before you leave.

How long can I record?

There's no fixed limit; it depends on your device's memory. Recordings of an hour or more work on most computers. For transcription, files can be up to 10 hours.

What format is the recording?

Your browser records compressed audio: WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, M4A in Safari. Choose Download MP3 for a file every device and editor can play.

Can I record a Zoom or Teams call with it?

It records your microphone only, not other people's audio from your computer. To transcribe a call, use the meeting app's own recording and upload the file.

Why does my browser ask for microphone access?

Websites can't use your microphone without permission. Click Allow when asked. If you blocked it, open the site settings from the icon next to the address bar and allow the microphone.
