What Google Docs voice typing can and can't do
Google Docs has voice typing (Tools, then Voice typing) in Chrome on a computer: you speak into your microphone and Docs types as you talk.
It can't open or transcribe an audio or video file. Playing a recording into your microphone works poorly: it only runs in real time, the sound loses quality on the way, and typing tends to stop at pauses and miss words.
How to get a recording's transcript into Google Docs
- 1Drop the recording into the upload box above and wait for the transcript.
- 2Choose Download, then Word document.
- 3In Google Drive, choose New, then File upload, and pick the .docx file. Open it and choose Open with Google Docs. Or simply click Copy transcript and paste it into a document.
Recording on a phone?
Some phone recorder apps can transcribe while they record. For any other recording, or a file you already have, upload it here and send the text to Google Docs as above.

Can Google Docs transcribe an audio file?
No. Voice typing in Google Docs only listens to your microphone while you speak. To transcribe a recording, upload it here and paste or import the transcript into Docs.
How accurate is the transcription?
We use state-of-the-art AI speech recognition. Clear recordings typically come out near-verbatim; heavy background noise, people talking over each other and very strong accents reduce accuracy.
What happens to my files?
Audio is converted in your browser, uploaded only to transcribe it, and deleted as soon as the transcript is ready. You can delete transcripts at any time.
How long can a file be?
Free files can be up to 30 minutes. Paid plans support files up to 10 hours each.
What's the difference between pay-as-you-go and Unlimited?
Pay-as-you-go credits are a one-time purchase that never expires — good for occasional long files. Unlimited is a subscription with no daily file limit, subject to fair use of 100 hours per 30 days.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Manage or cancel your subscription from your account page; you keep access until the end of the paid period.
